The Apostolic Constitution "Sacri Canones", issued October 18, 1990 by Pope John Paul II as he promulgated the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO), the canon law in force for Eastern Catholics. In this document (12.1 MB), Pope John Paul II describes the process for the development of a separate canon law for Eastern Catholics in union with Rome, stating that this Eastern Code "must be considered a new complement to the teachings proposed by the Second Vatican Council." John Paul II documents the involvement of Eastern Catholics in the development of the text of the Eastern Code and states: "We must admit that this Code is 'composed by the Easterners themselves' according to the directions given by our predecessor, Paul VI at the solemn inauguration of the work of the commission."
